Pafos municipality faces budget shortfall due to landfill debt
Acting Mayor of Pafos, Angelos Onisiforou, has reported a significant financial burden of approximately 400,000 euros stemming from historical debts related to the Pafos regional landfill (XYTA). The debt is linked to legal proceedings spanning the last decade involving the company Helector. The municipality's budget contains no provision for this payment, potentially hindering the landfill's operations. Onisiforou was informed of the debt late last week by the Pafos District Self-Government Organization (EOA). Consequently, he has written to the Auditor General, Andreas Papakonstantinou, requesting a formal investigation into the origins of the liability. Previous reports indicate the debt may be part of larger financial issues at the landfill during the tenure of the current mayor under suspension, Phedonas Phedonos. Onisiforou stated the landfill's current cash balance is zero and emphasized that he will not accept responsibility for past administrative failures.
