Cyprus expands foot and mouth disease containment measures
As of late April 2026, Cyprus reports 108 livestock units infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD) across Nicosia and Larnaca. Veterinary services confirm the infection affects 13 cattle units, 92 goat and sheep units, and 3 pig farms, with thousands of animals already culled. Vaccination progress has reached 81% for cattle, 64% for goats and sheep, and full coverage for pigs in restricted zones. Officials are currently debating whether to cull or preserve indigenous fat-tailed sheep and red cattle breeds, with a final decision expected by the end of the week. The European Union has extended movement and trade restrictions until June 15, while agricultural experts warn that full eradication could take several years. Constantinos Mouskou, a local breeder, has expressed grave concerns regarding the potential loss of rare genetic indigenous stocks. Authorities emphasize that the primary goal remains containing the virus, noting that the infection rate is showing signs of decline.
