Mexican authorities arrest two senior cartel leaders in separate operations

On Monday, Mexican security forces conducted two major operations resulting in the arrest of prominent cartel leaders. Audias Flores Silva, known as 'El Jardinero', a top commander of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and a potential successor to the late Nemesio Oseguera 'El Mencho', was captured in Nayarit state. The U.S. government had offered a five-million-dollar bounty for his arrest. According to the Mexican Navy, Flores was detained without a single shot fired near Puerto Vallarta, despite being protected by approximately 60 gunmen and 30 vehicles. Separately, authorities in Tamaulipas state arrested Alexander Benavides Flores, alias 'R9', a leader within the Gulf Cartel's 'Los Metros' faction in the border city of Reynosa. This second arrest triggered immediate violent retaliation, including roadblocks, arson, and gunfire throughout Reynosa. These operations mark a significant effort by the Mexican government to dismantle cartel leadership following the death of 'El Mencho' in February.
