Iran demands security guarantees at UN Security Council meeting
On April 28, 2026, the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, addressed the UN Security Council during a session convened at the request of Bahrain. Iravani stated that regional stability in the Persian Gulf depends on receiving credible guarantees that Iran will not face future attacks from the United States or Israel. He emphasized the necessity for a permanent end to hostilities and respect for Iranian sovereignty. During the meeting, several nations criticized Iran for its actions regarding control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global hydrocarbon exports. In response to the media, Iravani accused the United States of imposing a naval blockade and characterized American actions against Iranian vessels as piracy and state-sponsored terrorism. He expressed frustration that the international community targeted Iran with criticism while ignoring alleged U.S. maritime interdiction efforts. No consensus was reached during the session regarding the maritime security disputes.
