Tufan Erhurman discusses UN diplomatic activity on Cyprus issue
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman stated that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres remains actively interested in the Cyprus issue despite his term ending in December. Erhurman clarified that there are no expectations for a new peace plan similar to the Annan Plan. Instead, the focus is on achieving tangible progress on local issues in Nicosia before July, specifically regarding new crossing points. He emphasized that four crossing points previously discussed in New York remain a priority, noting that solutions for Mia Milia and Lurucina are considered feasible. The Turkish Cypriot side expressed readiness for five months of intense diplomatic activity starting in July. While Erhurman interpreted upcoming UN efforts as a new initiative, the Greek Cypriot presidential office denied the existence of a new UN initiative, characterizing it as a continuation of previous processes. Erhurman also urged for a new crossing point in Nicosia to address congestion at the Agios Dometios checkpoint.
