Andreas Mavroyiannis elected chair of the UN International Law Commission
Andreas Mavroyiannis, an ambassador ad honorem, was elected chair of the 77th session of the UN International Law Commission (ILC) on Monday in Geneva. His term extends until April 2027, covering the duration of the current session. The ILC is a subsidiary body of the UN General Assembly consisting of 34 independent experts elected for five-year terms. The committee's mandate involves the codification and development of international law, a task it has performed since 1949. Alongside Mavroyiannis, the bureau includes 1st Vice-Chair Alioune Sall from Senegal and 2nd Vice-Chair Alina Orosan from Romania. Furthermore, Rolf Einar Fife from Norway was appointed as head of the Drafting Committee, and Claudio Grossmann Guiloff from Chile was named Special Rapporteur. These officials were selected as part of the leadership team for the commission's 77th session.
