Eurostat reports 2023 cataract surgery statistics in European Union

According to data released by Eurostat, Cyprus recorded 12,194 cataract surgeries in 2023. This figure corresponds to 1,273.23 procedures per 100,000 inhabitants, placing Cyprus 10th among European Union member states. The EU average for the same period stood at 1,118 surgeries per 100,000 people, with over 5 million total procedures recorded across the union. Luxembourg reported the highest rate at 1,627.3 surgeries, followed by France and Estonia. Conversely, Romania had the lowest rate at 389.4 per 100,000 residents, followed by Poland and Bulgaria. In Cyprus, only 36 of the total surgeries required an overnight hospital stay. Across the EU, 6.4% of patients required hospitalization, while 55.8% were treated as day patients and 37.8% as outpatients.
