President Christodoulides addresses Cyprus negotiations and buffer zone tensions

President Nikos Christodoulides stated on April 27-28, 2026, that the UN Secretary-General's initiative for the Cyprus problem has been underway since March following meetings with himself and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Christodoulides expressed readiness to return to the negotiating table immediately, dismissing Turkish claims that the current Cypriot presidency or upcoming elections hinder the process. He rejected criticism from Tufan Erhurman regarding the signing of defense agreements, asserting his right to pursue deals that bolster the Republic of Cyprus's international status as an EU and UN member. Regarding recent buffer zone violations, the President characterized them as a deliberate attempt to challenge the UN's status and disrupt the current diplomatic momentum. He emphasized that verbal reactions from the UN are insufficient, calling for substantive actions to restore the previous status quo. Furthermore, Christodoulides noted that Erdogan declined to attend the informal summit held in Nicosia. The President confirmed that preparations are ongoing at the level of the Secretary-General and his personal envoy.
