President Christodoulides addresses buffer zone violations and UN peace initiative
President Nikos Christodoulides stated on April 27, 2026, that the UN Secretary-General's new initiative for the Cyprus problem has been in progress since early March. During a public event, he addressed recent activities in the buffer zone, specifically mentioning the Avlona area, and characterized them as violations of the status quo. According to the President, these actions have a dual purpose: to challenge the legitimacy of the buffer zone and Resolution 186/1964, and to intentionally obstruct the UN-led diplomatic process. Christodoulides expressed dissatisfaction with current verbal reactions from the UN, demanding tangible results that restore the situation to its previous state. He confirmed that the diplomatic process, initiated following his meeting with Antonio Guterres in Brussels, remains active, involving the Secretary-General and his personal envoy. Additionally, the President noted that dates have been proposed for a meeting with Tufan Erhurman.
