Iran moves to grant military control over the Strait of Hormuz
Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security Committee, announced that a proposed bill would grant the Iranian military authority over the Strait of Hormuz. The legislation aims to authorize armed forces to restrict the passage of vessels deemed hostile. Furthermore, the bill proposes that transit fees for the waterway must be paid in the local currency, the Iranian rial. Separately, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement declaring that controlling the strait is a decisive strategy in its ongoing confrontation with the United States. This strategic posture is intended to serve as a deterrent against the U.S. and its regional allies. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global transit point for oil and natural gas supplies. While the parliamentary committee frames the move as a legislative regulatory measure, the Revolutionary Guards emphasize its geopolitical utility in the conflict with Washington. The government is currently reviewing these proposals as part of its broader regional security framework.
