Residents dispute Riverside Stories development legality in Nicosia
A residents’ group from Hydras and Laryssis streets in Agioi Omologites, Nicosia, has formally contested the Riverside Stories development project. Residents challenge claims of legal compliance, asserting that the project is located within a designated historic core rather than outside it as the developers claim. They argue that the approval for a third floor, granted as an exception, contradicts standard planning regulations and compromises the area's historic character. Concerns cited include loss of sunlight, views, and ventilation for neighboring properties, as well as potential devaluation. A significant point of contention involves safety, with the Labour Inspection Department having issued a stop-work order following findings of serious dangers on the construction site. The residents emphasize that their opposition is based on urban planning concerns rather than a bias against luxury developments. While developers describe the project as legally compliant and environmentally sensitive, residents reject these descriptions as misleading. Specific requirements have been set by the Labor Inspection Department that the developers must fulfill before construction can resume.
