Debate over solar energy curtailment in Cyprus
The political movement Alma has criticized Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Michalis Damianos regarding his response to a parliamentary question from MP Irini Charalambidou. The discussion focused on the curtailment of residential solar energy production in Cyprus. Minister Damianos stated that these power cuts are a common EU practice necessitated by grid security and external factors. Conversely, the Alma movement labeled the Minister's response as misleading, attributing the issue to government incompetence and a lack of proper planning over the last three years. Alma cited data suggesting that Cyprus wastes approximately 47% of its generated green energy, significantly higher than the 8% lost in Greece and 4% in Germany. The movement demands that the government accept responsibility for what it describes as the mismanagement of renewable energy resources. This conflict highlights ongoing concerns regarding the integration and efficiency of Cyprus's renewable energy infrastructure.
