Road traffic accident statistics in the European Union for 2024

According to data released by Eurostat on Monday, traffic-related fatalities in the European Union decreased by 2.2% in 2024 compared to the previous year. A total of 19,934 deaths were recorded across the EU, down from 20,384 in 2023. This marks the second consecutive year of decline. Cyprus recorded 42 deaths per million inhabitants, which is below the European average of 44 deaths per million. Sweden, Malta, and Denmark reported the lowest rates, while Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece recorded the highest. Over the past decade, road fatalities have decreased by 17.4% since 2014, despite fluctuations during and after the pandemic. The highest numbers of road incidents were localized in regions of Germany, Italy, and Spain, with North Rhine-Westphalia recording 62,741 accidents.
