Diplomatic efforts to resume Cyprus negotiations are underway

President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed on Monday that a new United Nations initiative regarding the Cyprus issue has been in progress since early March. This process follows initial contacts between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as subsequent meetings between Christodoulides and the UN chief in Brussels. The government is pursuing a dual-track strategy involving both the UN and the European Union to facilitate an expanded conference aimed at resuming stalled negotiations. Preparatory work is currently being conducted by the Secretary-General and his personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. Separately, UN sources reported that Guterres intends to take further steps soon following recent meetings with Holguin, with a focus on substantive progress. Although there is no confirmed date for Holguin's next visit to Cyprus, stakeholders are awaiting further guidance on the future direction of these efforts. Additionally, Christodoulides confirmed that arrangements are being made for a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, with an official announcement expected within 24 hours.
