Cyprus hosts RSCy 2026 conference on remote sensing and space technology

The 12th International Conference on Remote Sensing and Geoinformation of the Environment (RSCy 2026) is taking place in Paphos, Cyprus, from April 27 to 29. The event has gathered over 250 delegates from more than 30 countries and is being held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. Deputy Research Minister Nikodemos Damianou emphasized that space technologies are critical for climate change monitoring and crisis response. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, representing the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence, announced that Cyprus plans to implement real-time wildfire tracking using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence. This system aims to provide fire spread projections every 20 minutes with a five-by-five kilometer resolution. Furthermore, 53 satellites are expected to be launched by 2030 to enhance global earth observation capabilities. The conference features 14 invited speakers, including representatives from a Google-led consortium, and highlights the dimension of space diplomacy with attendees from Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Hungary, Greece, Egypt, and India.
