EU commissioner ‘welcomes Turkey’s engagement’ in Cyprus talks

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos recently expressed support for Turkey’s involvement in informal United Nations talks aimed at resolving the long-standing Cyprus problem. During a meeting in Ankara, Kos highlighted that progress in these negotiations presents a significant opportunity for Turkey to advance its European Union accession process. She emphasized the necessity of building trust through bilateral initiatives, noting that EU-Turkey relations are heavily influenced by the situation in Cyprus. Despite these diplomatic efforts, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reportedly voiced frustration over the current lack of progress regarding confidence-building measures between the island's two communities. Consequently, UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin indicated that a broader meeting involving international guarantors will not occur until concrete results are achieved on the ground. The leaders of the two sides in Cyprus are now scheduled to meet again on February 24 to discuss potential ways forward.
