Illegal items seized at central prisons during intensified checks
Authorities at the Central Prisons have reported the seizure of dozens of mobile phones, drugs, and other prohibited items over the past four months. These findings resulted from intensified security screenings conducted both inside the facility and at visitor entrances, which began on January 1. The Ministry of Justice stated that these operations are part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety and proper functioning of the prison. In February, a legislative amendment to the Prisons Law was passed, criminalizing the possession, use, or attempted introduction of mobile phones and other contraband. These penalties apply to prisoners, visitors, and external individuals alike. Notably, the law imposes even stricter sanctions on prison staff found involved in such illegal activities. The Ministry and the prison administration emphasized that all future attempts to smuggle illicit items will be met with criminal prosecution and potential imprisonment. This update reflects a concerted effort by the Cyprus Ministry of Justice and Public Order to curb contraband flow.
