Larnaca local authorities call for protest over port and marina redevelopment delays

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras and local officials have scheduled a public protest for Wednesday at 6 p.m. near the city’s port to demonstrate against ongoing delays in the redevelopment of the port and marina. Two years after the termination of the contract with Kition Ocean Holdings, local stakeholders argue that the government has failed to meet its timelines for presenting a final development study from the Greek Growthfund. Mayor Vyras specifically criticized the government's study as incomplete, noting it lacks essential plans for the land development areas. He warned against converting the area into an industrial port, labeling such a shift as a 'cause for war' with the government. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades expressed confusion regarding the protest, stating that the government remains committed to the project and that the Ports Authority has been cleared to move forward with the marina. While the minister believes work can proceed without waiting for all land development studies, the mayor insists on integrated planning for economic viability. Additionally, the architectural competition for a conference center and yacht club is expected to be announced in May, though local authorities expressed doubts regarding the government's political will to finalize these plans.
