EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meets to discuss support for farmers
The European Union Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) met on Monday in Luxembourg to address the challenges facing the agricultural sector. Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, attended the meeting to discuss measures to mitigate rising production costs and geopolitical pressures. A primary focus of the meeting is the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) framework post-2027, with discussions centered on ensuring stable agricultural income and targeted support for producers. Dr. Panayiotou emphasized the need for a resilient policy that allows farmers to adapt and invest despite economic hardships. The Council is also reviewing current market conditions, specifically the impact of high prices for fertilizers and fossil fuels on farming operations. The objective is to secure sustainable food production while maintaining accessible prices for citizens. The meeting aims to formulate strategies for fairer distribution of financial aid to those most in need.
