Unauthorized agricultural activity reported in Avlona buffer zone
In the Avlona buffer zone of Cyprus, individuals identified as settlers have carried out unauthorized agricultural work on two occasions, specifically on Thursday and Sunday. The individuals operated machinery to mow hay and create bales in a restricted "frozen area" located directly beneath a United Nations observation post. Despite efforts by UN personnel to persuade the individuals to leave, they initially remained in the area and continued their work. Avlona community leader Menelaos Savva stated that the local community council is calling for the relocation of the UN patrol road further north, up to the limits of the Turkish military lookout. Local Greek Cypriot farmers report they cannot access their land in this sector due to security concerns, including the proximity of Turkish military positions and the absence of National Guard presence. While the UN continues to monitor the situation via patrols, enforcement of access restrictions remains a challenge. Greek Cypriot farmers have expressed concern that these incursions appear coordinated or tolerated by Turkish military authorities, as no such activity would occur without their knowledge. The incident remains a point of contention regarding the security and governance of the UN-controlled zone.
