Tensions escalate in Cyprus buffer zone as defense minister urges UN action
Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has reported an increase in unauthorized activity and provocations within the UN-controlled buffer zone, specifically in the areas of Avlona and Pyla. Minister Palmas stated that Turkish forces are attempting to gain ground in these areas and urged the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to adopt a stricter stance to hold Turkey accountable. On April 28, 2026, UNFICYP intervened in an incident near Avlona after Turkish security personnel mobilized against a Greek Cypriot farmer, which was later resolved peacefully. Additionally, the minister referenced a recurring issue where a individual, described as a Turkish settler, carried out unauthorized agricultural work in Avlona. Earlier in April, reports emerged regarding Turkish tanks near Pyla, though UNFICYP spokesperson Aleem Siddique stated the tanks remained north of the ceasefire line. Minister Palmas warned that these repeated violations risk creating serious incidents that could lead to casualties if not addressed decisively by the international community.
