Recent incidents in the Avlona buffer zone

A series of unauthorized agricultural activities in the buffer zone near Avlona have led to recent tensions. According to UN Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP) spokesperson Aleem Siddique, incidents occurred when individuals conducted farming without authorization near the northern ceasefire line, prompting a mobilization of Turkish Cypriot security personnel. UNFICYP successfully intervened to maintain the status quo and prevent further escalation, with security personnel leaving the area. Avlona community leader Menelaos Savva stated that a specific Turkish settler has repeatedly violated the zone without proper permits, despite previous UN warnings. Savva has expressed frustration over the lack of government action regarding buffer zone protection, noting that incidents have persisted for decades. Proposed measures to deter such illegal entries include infrastructure development, improved lighting, and the registration of roads. While UN patrols have increased following a March 31 meeting with Special Representative Colin Stewart, local leaders argue these measures are currently insufficient to prevent unauthorized access. The situation remains under close observation by UN officials to preserve stability in the sensitive area.
