Greek Independence Day parade held in Manhattan
On April 26, thousands of members of the Greek diaspora, along with numerous organizations and schools from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Canada, and Greece, participated in the annual parade on Manhattan's 5th Avenue to mark the 205th anniversary of Greek independence. Organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, the event featured Grand Marshals John Catsimatidis and Nikolas Tsakos, with additional roles held by Lou Katsos and other officials. Before the parade, a doxology service took place at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Manhattan, officiated by Archbishop Elpidophoros. Notable attendees included Greek Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis and New York City officials, including Mayor Zoran Mamdani. The procession featured the NYPD mounted guard, the Federation’s banner, and various historical flags representing Greek history, including those of Crete, Pontus, and Missolonghi. Participants emphasized themes of democracy, peace, and the preservation of national heritage. The event served as a major cultural gathering for the Greek-American community to honor their historical ties to Greece and Cyprus.
