Severe coastal erosion reported in Oroklini and Paphos regions

Significant coastal erosion is affecting the Oroklini area in Larnaca, leading to the closure of parts of the promenade and structural damage to private hotel properties, including the Radisson Beach Hotel. Marios Polyviou, CEO of SunnySeekers, reported that the issue, known since last year, remains unaddressed despite appeals to municipal authorities and public works departments. The erosion, exacerbated by heavy winter rainfall and incomplete coastal protection projects, has also caused safety concerns for pedestrians near open sinkholes. Concurrently, coastal regions in Paphos, specifically Geroskipou, Pegeia, and Polis Chrysochous, are facing similar problems. In Polis Chrysochous, erosion has reached up to 70 meters in some areas over time. Municipal authorities in Polis have begun implementing a decade-old plan from the National Technical University of Athens to construct fourteen breakwaters, with four prioritized to protect the beach from the municipal area to the campsite. The situation has severely impacted local hotel reservations, further compounded by ongoing road construction delays and regional geopolitical instability.
