Severe coastal erosion affects Paphos and Larnaca regions in Cyprus

Coastal erosion has intensified across Cyprus, specifically impacting the regions of Paphos and Larnaca following a winter of extreme weather. In Paphos, the municipalities of Geroskipou, Pegeia, and Polis Chrysochous are reporting significant damage, with some historical erosion points exceeding 70 meters. Authorities are conducting new assessments near Argaka to address the deterioration of infrastructure and the failure to complete previously planned coastal protection programs, including submerged breakwaters. Simultaneously, in the Oroklini area of Larnaca, rapid erosion has compromised hotel grounds and forced the closure of sections of the coastal promenade due to structural risks. Hotel operators, including management at the Radisson Beach Hotel, have reported safety hazards for guests and criticized the lack of official remedial action. Stakeholders are calling for urgent intervention from the Larnaca Municipality and the Public Works Department. Local tourism in Larnaca is also facing additional pressure due to delays in road construction and the broader geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
