Challenges in addressing the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus

Cyprus is currently dealing with an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, which has affected livestock across the island, including incidents in pig farms. Under the control of the Republic of Cyprus, culling measures have resulted in the loss of more than 9% of the total animal population. Efforts to coordinate a unified response via the Bicommunal Technical Committee for Health are currently delayed due to political disagreements and a lack of trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides. While international protocols typically involve joint surveillance and rapid action, the fragmented political landscape in Cyprus complicates the implementation of consistent veterinary standards. The next session of the Bicommunal Subcommittee for Veterinary Issues is scheduled for April 30. During this meeting, it remains to be seen whether the Turkish Cypriot side will agree to adopt uniform culling measures. The ongoing crisis highlights the administrative difficulties posed by the island's divided status, impacting both the agricultural economy and food security.
