Overview of security incidents involving Donald Trump
Donald Trump has faced multiple security threats and attempted assassinations throughout his political career. During his 2024 campaign, two major attempts occurred: first, in July 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Thomas Matthew Crooks wounded Trump in the ear and killed one bystander before being neutralized; and second, in September 2024, when Ryan Wesley Routh was apprehended at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, after being spotted by Secret Service agents. Routh was subsequently taken into custody and faces life imprisonment. Other incidents include a 2016 attempt in Las Vegas by a British national to seize a police weapon, and a 2017 incident in North Dakota where a man attempted to target the presidential motorcade with a forklift. The Secret Service has faced significant scrutiny and leadership changes following identified security failures during these events. Authorities also investigated a 2020 case involving a French-Canadian woman suspected of sending threatening materials.
