Cyprus and France to sign status of forces agreement in June

Cyprus and France are finalizing a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) scheduled for signature in June to formalize bilateral defense cooperation. President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed that the agreement establishes a legal framework for the presence, movement, and activities of French military personnel on Cypriot territory. While the primary stated purpose is humanitarian assistance and regional crisis response, the agreement also covers logistical support, infrastructure use, jurisdiction, and customs procedures. The deal is built on four pillars: operational coordination, defense technology procurement, joint exercises, and strategic dialogue. This partnership builds upon an upgraded agreement signed last December following a visit by President Emmanuel Macron. The arrangement is reciprocal, applying to Cypriot personnel in France as well. Additionally, Cyprus plans to utilize approximately 1.2 billion euros in EU funding for security initiatives, while fostering collaboration between the defense industries of both nations.
