Developments regarding the election of the new Paphos Metropolitan and Tychikos case
Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus announced that a new Metropolitan of Paphos is expected to be elected by the end of May. The Holy Synod has scheduled meetings for May 18, 19, and 20 to review and approve a new church statute. Regarding the suspended former Metropolitan Tychikos, the Archbishop clarified that the Synod's decisions were based on ecclesiastical issues, specifically regarding zealotry and attitudes toward the Holy Council of Crete, rather than external accusations. While the Archbishop stated that formal removal of Tychikos has not been placed before the Synod, he did not rule out future measures. Conversely, legal representatives for Tychikos have requested a revocation of the Synod's decisions, citing procedural concerns and the withholding of evidence. Tychikos's side also reported a violent removal from a church, an incident currently under investigation by the police, while asserting that his actions did not violate the terms of his suspension. The legal team is seeking either a review by the Synod or cancellation of the decisions by the Supreme Court of Cyprus.
