Clashes reported between suspended Bishop Tychikos and clergy in Paphos
On Sunday, April 26, 2026, an altercation occurred at the Church of the Apostle Paul and Barnabas in Paphos between the suspended former Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, and Archimandrite Ioannis Theocharous. The Archbishopric states that Tychikos violated his suspension by wearing episcopal vestments and attempting to perform a commemoration during the liturgy, which resulted in a physical confrontation. Tychikos, through his lawyer Eirineos Antoniou Giakoumakis, denies the assault, claiming the incident was orchestrated for political and economic motives related to the management of church property and loans. Both parties have filed police complaints against each other. The lawyer alleges that the archimandrite was not truly injured and was seen driving normally after the incident. Meanwhile, the Archbishopric maintains that the incident is a matter for the authorities and that the former bishop must respect the Holy Synod's disciplinary decisions. The legal representative for Tychikos also cited ongoing disputes regarding interest rates on loans issued by the Archbishopric to the Paphos Metropolis.
