Clashes reported between suspended Bishop Tychikos and Archimandrite in Paphos
On April 26, 2026, a physical altercation occurred at the Church of Apostle Paul and Barnabas in Paphos between the suspended former Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, and the Protosyncellus of the Metropolis, Archimandrite Ioannis Theocharous. The incident took place during a divine liturgy. Archimandrite Theocharous alleges that Tychikos attempted to participate in the service despite his suspension by the Holy Synod and assaulted him, causing pain to his neck, which had recently undergone surgery. Following the incident, the Archimandrite sought medical attention at the Paphos General Hospital and filed a police report. In response, Tychikos, through his legal counsel Eirineos Giakoumakis, denied the allegations of assault and claimed he was only present to pray. His legal team contends that the Archimandrite initiated the physical contact by pulling Tychikos's arm and further alleged that the Archimandrite's injury was pre-existing. Both parties have filed reciprocal police complaints. The Archbishopric has called for calm, stating the matter is under investigation, while supporters of Tychikos suggest the timing of the event is suspicious and potentially motivated by political or economic interests.
