Confrontation between suspended bishop and archimandrite in Paphos
On April 26, 2026, an altercation occurred at the Saint Paul Church in Paphos involving the former Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, and the parish priest, Archimandrite Ioannis Theocharous. Tychikos attempted to participate in a divine liturgy, but the archimandrite informed him that he was prohibited from doing so due to his current suspension status imposed by the Holy Synod. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation. According to reports, the archimandrite alleged that Tychikos pushed him during the dispute, leading to the clergyman's transfer to Paphos General Hospital with neck and arm pain. The archimandrite stated his intention to file a formal police complaint upon his discharge. Separately, supporters of the former Metropolitan have organized a demonstration at Paphos City Hall to protest against what they perceive as the defamation of the Church and to advocate for his reinstatement. This group plans a protest march toward the Paphos Metropolis building to voice their demands regarding episcopal elections and the application of canon law.
