Italian football refereeing chief under investigation for alleged fraud
The Milan Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into Gianluca Rocchi, the designator for Serie A and B referees, on allegations of sporting fraud. Authorities are examining claims that Rocchi exerted pressure on VAR decisions and influenced the assignment of referees to favor Inter Milan during the 2024/25 season. Specific matches under scrutiny include the Inter games against Bologna on April 20, 2025, and Milan on April 2, 2025, as well as an Udinese-Parma match on March 1, 2025, where Rocchi allegedly intervened in a penalty decision. Prosecutors are also reviewing a 2024 incident involving a failure to send off Inter player Alessandro Bastoni during a match against Verona. Andrea Gervasoni, a VAR official, is also being investigated for alleged interference. Both individuals have been suspended from their duties, and the Italian Referees Association (AIA) is currently selecting a temporary successor. Rocchi, who is scheduled for a hearing on April 30, has denied the allegations, stating he has full confidence in the justice system. The investigation has drawn significant attention, with Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
