The case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard
Dee Dee Blanchard, a resident of Springfield, Missouri, claimed for years that her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, suffered from numerous severe illnesses, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and brain damage. Throughout her childhood, Gypsy Rose was forced to use a wheelchair, take various medications, and undergo medical procedures, despite being physically healthy. These false claims allowed the pair to receive charity, housing, and gifts from organizations such as Make-A-Wish. The deception was uncovered on June 14, 2015, following a Facebook post from Dee Dee’s account stating that she had been killed. Police discovered Dee Dee’s body in her home with 17 stab wounds. Gypsy Rose was subsequently implicated in orchestrating the murder to escape her mother's long-term abuse and medical fraud. The case highlighted a extreme instance of Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
