Ukrainian soldiers rescue animals from front lines using drones
Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war on February 24, 2022, many animals have been observed in combat zones, including trenches and medical stations. Recently, the 14th Independent Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine conducted a rescue operation for a cat named Barsik and a dog named Zagibluk. The animals were located on the front line, an area considered too dangerous for human personnel to enter. To perform the rescue, soldiers placed the animals into special ventilated containers attached to a drone. According to Nadiya Zamryga, the brigade's press officer, the drone operator had to navigate approximately 10 kilometers to reach safety. The operation was successful and the animals were safely retrieved. The use of drone technology highlights the tactical adaptations soldiers are employing to address non-combatant animal welfare during active military operations.
