Coordinated armed attacks reported across Mali

On the morning of the reported events, coordinated attacks by armed groups, including the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and jihadist organizations, targeted military installations and other sites across Mali, including the capital, Bamako. By midday, FLA Tuareg rebels claimed to have seized control of the strategic town of Kidal. The military junta governing Mali since the 2020 and 2021 coups stated that the situation is under control and that national forces are neutralizing the attackers. Analyst Charlie Werb of Aldebaran Threat Consultants described the event as a coordinated offensive on a scale unseen since 2012. In response to the instability, the U.S. Embassy in Bamako and the United Nations issued security advisories, instructing personnel to shelter in place. Mali has been grappling with a security crisis involving Al-Qaeda and Islamic State-linked jihadists, as well as separatist groups, since 2012. Official military reports suggest the situation is contained, contrasting with the claims made by insurgent factions regarding their territorial gains.
