Cyprus government expenses for EU summit transport and presidency logistics

The government of the Republic of Cyprus spent approximately €140,000 to rent 12 armoured BMW 7 Series limousines for use during an informal EU summit held on April 23-24 at the Ayia Napa marina and the Filoxenia conference centre in Nicosia. The vehicles were brought from Germany for a 10-day period at a daily rate of approximately €1,166 per car, with costs expected to be reimbursed by the EU budget. Authorities classified specific technical details of the tender as confidential for security reasons. Additionally, the government has awarded a separate contract worth roughly €1 million to lease 60 BMW 5 Series vehicles for the duration of the Cyprus presidency of the Council of the EU, scheduled from January 1 to June 30, 2026. These vehicles will serve logistical needs for officials, delegations, and administrative staff. Similar vehicle leasing practices were employed during the previous Cyprus EU presidency in 2012. The current arrangements ensure that security standards are met for high-ranking participants.
