Coordinated militant attacks reported across Mali

On Saturday morning, coordinated attacks were reported in Mali's capital Bamako, as well as in the towns of Kati, Sevare, Kidal, and Gao. According to witnesses and the Malian army, explosions and gunfire occurred near the main military base in Kati around 6 a.m. local time. The Malian military stated that unidentified terrorist groups carried out the assaults, though no group has officially claimed full responsibility for all incidents. Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane of the Azawad Liberation Front claimed their forces seized positions in Kidal and Gao, but this assertion remains unverified. Security sources have linked the JNIM group to the instability. Mali has been under military rule following coups in 2020 and 2021, and the current administration continues to combat various insurgencies. The government has recently relied on Russian security support while navigating complex relations with Western nations. Fighting in the region remained ongoing as authorities urged residents to stay calm.
