PASYDY pushes for indefinite employment status for fixed-term public sector workers
The Pancyprian Public Employees Trade Union (PASYDY) is campaigning to convert fixed-term public sector workers into indefinite-term employees. The initiative focuses on staff who have completed at least 30 months of cumulative employment within the same department. It is estimated that more than 1,000 workers currently meet this 30-month threshold. Despite state guidelines aimed at preventing the creation of permanent employee-employer relationships through service contracts, the union argues that legal standards support their transition. Previous rulings from the Labor Disputes Court and the Director of Social Insurance have indicated that such work relationships effectively constitute employer-employee bonds. The Cabinet had previously directed ministry directors to review these cases to determine proper contract status. A meeting to discuss these developments with members is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, led by PASYDY General Secretary Stratis Matthaiou.
