UK reaffirms Falkland Islands sovereignty after Pentagon email leak

This statement followed reports of an internal Pentagon email suggesting that the U.S. could reassess its diplomatic support for the islands as a potential measure to pressure the UK over its stance regarding the Iran war. The email allegedly proposed penalizing NATO allies that failed to support U.S. operations in Iran by targeting their overseas territories. Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno responded by reiterating his country's claim to the islands, which they refer to as the Malvinas, and called for resumed negotiations. The dispute centers on the status of the archipelago, which was the subject of a brief 1982 war between the two nations that resulted in the deaths of 650 Argentine and 255 British service personnel. Prime Minister Starmer's office emphasized that pressure from the U.S. regarding the Iran conflict would not influence his commitment to British national interests. The British government maintains that its position on the islands is longstanding and remains unchanged.
