Informal EU summit concludes in Cyprus with focus on security and regional relations
The two-day informal European Council summit held in Cyprus was evaluated as a positive development by Michalis Moutselos, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Cyprus. Key discussions focused on Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty, which outlines mutual assistance among member states in the event of an attack. The summit also included regional leaders from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, marking a significant attempt to deepen EU relations with these neighboring countries. Moutselos noted that the Cyprus Presidency successfully prioritized these topics, with support from Greece and France. The objective is to further the EU's strategic autonomy and provide more clarity on the operationalization of the mutual assistance clause. This is particularly significant for Cyprus, as the country is not a member of NATO. Discussions on these matters are expected to continue in the near future.
