Cyprus political parties mark Armenian genocide remembrance day
On April 24, political parties in Cyprus, including DISY and AKEL, issued statements commemorating the Armenian genocide of 1915. DISY characterized the events as a campaign of extermination orchestrated by the Ottoman Empire and the Young Turk movement, emphasizing that approximately 1.5 million Armenians perished. While countries such as Cyprus, Armenia, France, Germany, Greece, and the United States officially recognize these events as genocide, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan categorize them as wartime casualties. Other nations, including the United Kingdom and Spain, have not formally issued a genocide declaration. Cypriot parties reiterated their support for the Armenian diaspora and the international recognition of these historical events. AKEL highlighted the importance of the Armenian community as an integral part of Cypriot society. The parties stressed that the denial of these crimes remains a point of contention regarding international law and historical truth.
