EU discusses sanctions against Russia and diplomatic strategy for Iran
On Friday, EU leaders gathered for an informal summit in Nicosia to address ongoing international crises. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas confirmed the adoption of the 20th sanctions package against Russia and praised the approval of a €90 billion loan for Ukraine. Several prime ministers advocated for the preparation of a 21st sanctions package to demonstrate continued support for Ukraine. Regarding the Middle East, Kallas expressed concern over current negotiations with Iran, stating they should not be limited solely to nuclear issues. She emphasized that discussions must also include Iran's ballistic missile program and its support for regional armed groups. Kallas warned that failure to address these areas could result in a deal weaker than the original JCPOA. The summit participants sought to establish a clearer collective position on regional security and stability.
