Customs authorities intercept contraband at Agios Dometios crossing

On April 22, 2026, customs officials at the Agios Dometios crossing point intercepted a Turkish Cypriot driver transporting 75 kilograms of bovine hides. The driver was arrested, and the vehicle and goods were confiscated. He was subsequently released after reaching an out-of-court settlement for 500 euros. On April 23, 2026, authorities at the same location stopped another vehicle driven by a Turkish Cypriot. During this search, they discovered 175 cartons of regular cigarettes, 100 cartons of heated tobacco products, and 6 kilograms of hookah tobacco. These products lacked mandatory health warning labels in Greek and Turkish, indicating they were untaxed. The driver was arrested, and the vehicle along with the contraband was seized. The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Nicosia District Court to face a remand hearing.
