Meta introduces internal tracking tool for AI training in the United States
Meta has launched an internal initiative called the Model Capability Initiative to track employee activity on company computers in the United States. This tool records mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and occasional screenshots within work-related applications and websites. According to internal memos, the project is part of a broader strategy known as the Agent Transformation Accelerator. The company aims to use this data to train AI agents that can replicate human interactions with software interfaces, such as navigating menus and using keyboard shortcuts. Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, indicated that the ultimate goal is for AI agents to perform the majority of work while employees shift to supervisory roles. Meta stated that the data will not be used for performance evaluations and that safeguards are in place to protect sensitive information. Despite these assurances, the initiative has faced significant opposition and discomfort from employees. The company maintains that collecting these real-world examples is necessary for developing efficient AI assistants for daily tasks.
