Status of Iranian leader Mojtaba Khamenei after February 28 airstrike
According to reports by the New York Times and Israeli media, Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was seriously injured in an Israeli airstrike on February 28 that also killed his predecessor and father, Ali Khamenei. Reports indicate he remains in an undisclosed location under medical care, including treatment by President Masoud Pezeshkian and the Minister of Health. His injuries include severe burns to his face and lips that hinder speech, as well as multiple surgeries on one leg, which will require a prosthetic limb. He also underwent surgery on one hand, which is slowly regaining function. Despite these physical impairments, unnamed Iranian officials state he remains mentally alert and continues to govern through a committee-like structure with commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He has made no public appearances since his appointment and communicates only through written statements. Security concerns have limited access to him, as officials fear that visiting him could lead Israel to discover his location.
