Eurostat reports gender gap in programming skills among youth

Data released by Eurostat in 2025 indicates that Cyprus is the only European Union member state where girls aged 16-19 are more likely to write programming code than boys. In Cyprus, 6.29% of girls reported writing code in the three months prior to the survey, compared to 2.02% of boys. Across the European Union, the trend is reversed, with 19.8% of boys reporting coding activity versus 10.0% of girls in the same age demographic. The largest gender gaps in favor of boys were observed in Portugal (26.6%), Belgium (17.9%), and Slovakia (17.4%). Smaller gaps were noted in Bulgaria (0.2%), Latvia (1.6%), and Romania (2.4%). Additionally, the report noted that girls aged 16-19 in the EU demonstrate higher digital content creation skills than the general population, with significant portions managing file transfers and cloud storage.
