Cyprus parliament dissolves ahead of May 24 elections
The House of Representatives of Cyprus is set to dissolve on April 23, 2026, to pave the way for general elections scheduled for May 24. The first session of the newly elected House is slated for June 4 at 4:00 PM, in accordance with Article 67 of the Constitution. House President Annita Demetriou will preside over the dissolution ceremony following the completion of the current plenary's legislative agenda. At least 18 sitting members of parliament have announced they will not seek re-election, including notable figures from DISY, AKEL, DIKO, and EDEK. Candidate submissions are officially set for May 6, with the election decree to be published in the Republic of Cyprus' official gazette on Friday. While some MPs are retiring, others are shifting their party affiliations ahead of the new term. Marios Mavridis is the sole exception among departing members, as he will run for the Maronite community representative seat. The process concludes months of legislative activity before the country transitions to its next parliamentary mandate.
