Lithuanian president visits Cyprus for bilateral talks

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda arrived at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia at 10:00 am on Thursday to meet with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. This visit marks the first time a Lithuanian head of state has visited Cyprus in 25 years. The reception included full official honours, a guard of honour, and the performance of national anthems, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Archbishop Makarios. The two leaders held a one-on-one meeting, which was scheduled to be followed by expanded delegation-level talks. The agenda focused on cooperation in the defence industry and technology sectors. This visit occurs ahead of an informal EU leaders' summit, which Cyprus is hosting for the first time this Thursday and Friday. Lithuania is scheduled to assume the presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027. Officials noted that the two presidents would not make statements to the media.
