Traffic incidents and police investigations in Nicosia

On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, a two-vehicle collision on the Nicosia–Akaki highway near the Kokkinotrimithia exit resulted in the closure of both traffic lanes. An elderly driver involved in the accident was transported to the hospital, though their condition remains unclear. Traffic was diverted through the village of Kokkinotrimithia until 13:00 while the scene was cleared. In a separate matter, Griva Digeni Avenue in Nicosia was scheduled for closure on April 28 from 20:00 to 22:00 for the reconstruction of a fatal crash. This investigation concerns the death of 28-year-old police officer Andreas Antoniou, who died on March 27 after his motorcycle collided with a car driven by a 23-year-old woman in Engomi. Police confirmed the victim was wearing a helmet, and toxicological tests on the driver were negative. Reconstruction operations were conducted by the Traffic Headquarters Crash Examination and Reconstruction Unit in collaboration with Nicosia traffic investigators.
